Overview

Unifix® Software is a combination of interlocking cubes and ancillary materials designed to enable children to explore and understand basic concepts in mathematics. Unifix Software provides these same materials in a digital format, including several universally designed features. By moving the cubes either with a mouse or through a single switch, children who normally have difficulty with manipulation of small objects can participate in the same exploratory activities as other children. The tool set available for children can be tailored to fit the needs of different learners through user preferences. The manual includes standards-based learning activities, and it is easy to create additional activity templates.

1. Multiple Representations of Information

Unifix Software provides multiple representations of number concepts. The number concepts are represented visually through sets of objects, symbolically through numbers, and auditorily through sounds associated with the cubes.

Customizing Tips

  • For students using a single switch to control the computer, start with a small set of tools so that the student can learn how to use them efficiently. Add tools to the scanning set as the student becomes more skilled.
  • For students easily distracted by noises, turn off all sound effects so that it is easier for them to concentrate on the numbers.

Universal Design Wish List

  • Add talking buttons to the toolbar icons. Some of the graphical representations of the icons are not clear.
