Using Picture Cues
In
this activity, students learn to use pictures to help them
read text in the WiggleWorks book, Kites.
Procedure
Record Teacher Messages in the Read version of Kites that
direct students through the activity. (See below for sample
Teacher Messages.)
Read the book with a group of students in Read Aloud.
Have students look at each picture carefully. Point to the
kite on each page and ask students to predict the color
word. Click on the word and have the computer read it to
confirm their prediction.
Have students read the story together in small groups or
in pairs at the computer. Remind students to listen to any
teacher messages you may have recorded when they see the
speech bubble icon on the bottom of the screen. Ask students
to look at the kites, find the color words, click to hear
them read, and copy them into the My Words list. At the end
of the book, have them print a copy of the My Words list in
flash card format for every group member. Have students cut
their grids into word cards that they can color and
illustrate with objects whose color matches the word.
Sample Teacher Messages
"On
each screen, look at the kite. What color is it? Find that color word
on the page and add it to your My Words list." (Record a similar message
on other pages to focus students on the activity.)
"This picture has the colors of the rainbow which also happen to be the
colors of the kites in this story. Do you have all those color words in
your My Words list? If not, go back through the story and add them to
your My Words list. Have fun!"
"Now that you've finished the story and you've collected all
the color words, print them out in flash card format. Cut
them up into flash cards and color them to match the
words."
