Survey: Student Technology Use
Review Survey Questions
In the survey of Consortium members conducted by CAST, about half of the respondents (n = 46) reported that students access
computers from the classroom and the other half said that students use a computer lab.
43% of the respondents to the CAST survey indicate that their students use computers 2-3 times per
week, as compared to settings in which students use computers more than once a day (9%), daily
(17%), or once per week (9%). 87% of these teachers report that students usually work individually
on computers rather than in groups.
Barriers to the use of computers and the Internet for instruction listed by teachers are not enough
computers (78%), lack of release time to learn how to use computers (82%), and lack of time in
schedule for students to use computers in class (80%).
Teachers assign students to use computers for word processing or creating spreadsheets most
frequently (61%), followed by Internet research (51%), practicing drills (50%), solving problems and
analyzing data (50%), CD-ROM research (48%), multimedia projects (45%), graphical presentations
(43%), demonstration and simulation (39%), and correspondence with experts (23%).
