Sight Words
Encourage
recognition of words by sight by having students compare
words in the story to words on a list. Using the Read
feature, they pick out the words that match those on the
list as they go through the story.
Procedure
Prepare a list of words from the story that you want your
students to identify. Provide students with a written list
of those words.
Individually or in small groups, students collect target
words into the My Words list. Ask students to open My Words
and pick out words from the written list as they read,
adding them to the My Words list on the screen. Students can
click on a word to hear it pronounced if they aren't sure
what word it is. When they have completed the exercise, the
same words should appear in their My Words list as are on
the written list. To vary the challenge, either list words
in the order they appear in the story, or mix up the
order.
As a variation, add the target words to the student's My
Words list beforehand. Students can match up words by
clicking on them to hear them read in the list and in the
text. For extra practice, have students make sentences with
the words in the Write area by copying the words into text
from the My Words list.
