Hearing an Expert Reader
When
students encounter unfamiliar words, hearing an expert read
the word on demand can scaffold their ability to recognize
the word. Similarly, hearing an expert read a sentence can
help students by modeling fluent, expressive reading.
Procedure
To help students learn to recognize unfamiliar words,
encourage them to click on difficult words to hear them read
aloud. Then, have students try to read each word unassisted,
clicking on each word to check themselves.
To help students build fluency and expression, set the
reading mode to line-by-line and regular speed and encourage
students to listen to, then record themselves reading each
line or sentence of text.
