Using Universally Designed Features of Software to Customize Learning

Disclaimer: CAST does not necessarily endorse these products or consider them all to be fully universally designed. CAST applauds the inclusion of universally designed features in these products and wishes to illustrate some of those features for educational purposes.

Software with universal design (UD) features facilitates individualization of learning materials and experiences for maximum inclusion and teaching effectiveness. How can teachers use software available today to customize learning?

In this section we answer that question by providing examples of UD features in existing software, with tips for how to use these features to customize instruction for students with varied learning needs. Features are organized according to CAST's three principles of universal design for learning:

Supported Learning Software

Universal design features in these programs support reading, writing, and multimedia composition. Because students and teachers provide the content, these programs can be integrated into many subject areas.
