Creating Bozo Books
Many students need challenges in comprehension more than
in the mechanics of reading. To build comprehension skills,
have students challenge each other with "Bozo Books."
Working in the My Book area, change parts of the text so
that the meaning of text and picture no longer coincide.
Students can demonstrate their comprehension of the text by
detecting and fixing the incongruities. The can "fix" the
incongruities either by changing the text so that it
supports the picture or by changing the picture so that it
supports the text. Students are challenged to read carefully
and understand.
Procedure
Use the My Book section to create a new version of a WiggleWorks
book--a "Bozo Book." First, demonstrate how to alter the My
Book text by highlighting it and typing over it.
Have students take turns altering each page of a WiggleWorks book
in some fashion that makes the pictures and the text
incongruent. In this example, the text has been changed from
"The moose brought juice and a bucket of ice," to "The goose
brought juice and a bucket of ice."
After creating Bozo Books, have students find the Bozo
parts and fix them. Students can work in pairs to create
Bozo books and challenge each other to discover all the
incongruities.
