Adding Universal Design Enhancements

Digital content and supported learning tools can help us assemble flexible materials that are more accessible to varied learners. Some of these tools are relatively automated. For example, digital text can be converted to speech through a system that translates one directly to the other.

True universal design for learning requires judgments, decisions, and thoughtful attention to the nature of curricular tasks and the means by which these tasks are communicated and carried out. How do we describe images in words? How do we present an assignment with a clear learning focus and maximum flexibility? In this section we invite you to join us as we consider ways to approach these issues.

Universal design enhancements are customizations of digital materials that increase their value and appropriateness for different learners. We address these enhancements according to three principles:

  1. provide alternative representations of content
  2. provide multiple options for expression and control for students
  3. provide options that promote engagement, interest, and motivation
