Engaging Students in Writing Mechanics (Grades 9 and 10) Lesson 1: Introduction

This UDL lesson is designed to engage students in using a newspaper article describing an automobile accident to learn about noun/verb agreement and to learn and apply a three-step strategy for writing descriptive sentences.

UDL principles are applied by:

  • providing multiple versions of the text of the newspaper article highlighted to show the nouns and verbs and using a PowerPoint® presentation to present the accident context and to guide students’ understanding of the three-step strategy for writing descriptive sentences;
  • offering multiple strategies and options for students to express their understanding;
  • selecting an engaging event and using interesting visuals and real world contexts to engage students' interest.
