Vocabulary Development: Introduction

This sample lesson demonstrates a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach to developing vocabulary prior to and during novel reading. Based on research conducted by Dr. Isabel Beck, this approach focuses on identifying words prior to reading, prioritizing the words into three distinct tiers, and developing student-friendly definitions of words while actively engaging students in word learning. Pre-teaching word meanings prior to passage reading reduces cognitive load during reading and allows students to connect to the text on a deeper level.

This lesson provides methods for teachers and students using Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. However, the techniques and activities can be used with any novel.
