50 State Accessible Curriculum Policy Survey
Back to Summary Page
FLORIDA
Interview Notes
On February 20, 2003 we spoke with Charlie Carraway, Program Specialist/Instructional
Materials.
- Specific provisions exist for reproducing textbooks in Braille or large
print: FL Statute Section 233.0561(5)
- There are provisions listed in the back of subject area specification documents
re: reproducing textbooks for visually impaired
(e.g.: http://www.firn.edu/doe/instmat/;
click on “Math K-8” and look at last 2 pages)
- In terms of broader accessibility efforts, Carraway says that, although
there is no statute regarding this, they (FL DOE) request that publishers
"incorporate strategies that consider different learning needs."
Carraway explained this provision by stating that Florida “wants the
publishers to think about universal design for curricular focus but does not
provide specific instructions"
- As of 10/02/03, “Florida's requirements have not changed statutorily.
We defer to Suzanne Dalton at our Center for Visually Impaired as to expectations
of publishers and keeping pace with changes to (federal) law.” E-mail
from Elizabeth Carrouth, Program Director, Instructional Materials
