ALASKA
Interview Notes (March, 2003)
On March 21, 2003 we spoke with Art Arnold, State SPED Director.
- He is not aware of any AK laws requiring publishers to provide materials
in accessible formats
- Instructional materials for the deaf/blind are produced through an initiative
with the Alaska Deaf/Blind Center in Anchorage through a contract with the
state Dept. of Labor; they provide K-12 materials
- Re: LD kids and kids with physical limitations, the state library and the
Medicaid office does a lot in terms of assistive technology and supportive
devices for kids who need them
- Very unique state because of large rural populations. Students in need
of accessible materials may be geographically isolated, which can affect their
ability to seek needed services.
