It is difficult to separate a course of study, media, and materials used for learning from the appropriate instructional methods but, for clarity and to isolate selected details for study and discussion, we will attempt to do so here. By querying the NCAC staff and affiliates, along with experts in the field, the Curriculum Group has selected a number of promising responses to barriers to the general curriculum (enhancements and/or accommodations) through which they have been examining existing published research. After extensive discussion, they have chosen to focus on at least eight enhancements and/or accommodations that represent a range of modalities, practices, and critical elements of universal design for learning.

Teacher Survey Summary

NCAC Curriculum Teacher Survey

We surveyed a convenience sample of teachers to find out:

  • What curricular adaptations and enhancements teachers make in their classrooms to accommodate different learners;
  • What curriculum adaptations and enhancements provided by publishers that teachers use to accommodate different learners;
  • What curricular adaptations or enhancements teachers would make to their curriculum if they had more resources.

Survey of Published Materials

Informal Survey of Textbooks

We analyzed a sample of the teacher's editions for programs across publisher, grade levels, and subject matter to determine:

  • What curriculum adaptations and enhancements to accommodate different learners publishers describe in the front matter of their materials;
  • What curriculum adaptations and enhancements to accommodate different learners are included in the materials.
